Bath dominates in win over Lady Cougars

LIMA — The Van Wert Lady Cougars came up against a defensive buzz saw when they visited the Bath Wildkittens on Thursday.

Bath, who used a stifling press, held the Cougars to just 24 points in downing Van Wert 55-24 in two teams’ Western Buckeye League girls’ basketball match-up. Van Wert had an uncharacteristic 21 turnovers in the game.

No Van Wert player was in double figures, while the Cougars’ leading scorer, Erin Morrow, was held to just one three-point basket in the game. Meghan Moonshower was Van Wert’s lead scorer with just 6 points.

Bath sank 11 three-pointers and outrebounded the Lady Cougars 32-21, including an amazing 22 offensive rebounds.

The state-ranked Wildkittens had two players in double figures, led by Maddie Dackin’s 16 points. Alyssa Manley added 11 points for Bath, while Haylee Brenek scored 9 points for Bath.

The Wildkittens led by 11 points, 14-3, after the first eight minutes of play and was up by 12 points, 22-10, at the half. The score was 40-17 heading into the fourth quarter after Bath outscored Van Wert 18-7 in the third stanza.

With the win, the Wildkittens are now 15-1 overall and 6-0 in the WBL, while the struggling Cougars are 4-13 and 0-6 in league play.

The Van Wert junior varsity team also lost.
