YWCA awards academic scholarships

YWCA of VW County information

The YWCA of Van Wert County has presented two local young women with academic scholarships.  The scholarships were presented to Hannah Hulbert and Holly Lawson, both of Van Wert High School, at their Senior Awards Assembly by YWCA Executive Director Tammy Branham.

These awards are presented to Van Wert County high school senior girl applicants who display good moral character, are active church members and volunteer in community organizations.  In addition these applicants display both leadership and Christian character in their daily life.

Hannah is the daughter of Matthew and Tina Hulbert. Throughout her high school career, she has been able to lead by example; her Christian character was evidenced by her unwavering ability to successfully lead a group of her peers as captain of the soccer team and the basketball team.

Whether she was actively participating in a sport or standing with the team and encouraging them to be the best they could be, Hulbert’s strong moral character has shown others that no matter what circumstance people are living in, they can always choose to live their life with a sense of peace and dignity.

Her future goals include obtaining a degree in chemical engineering and attending a United States Service Academy. Hulbert also plans to attend the University of Cincinnati in the fall to begin her studies.

Lawson is the daughter of Bill and Lisa Lawson. She has lived a life of Christian character in many ways.  Currently, she volunteers with her church youth group, planning and participating in annual events and fundraisers such as the Dick Schultz Volleyball Tournament, which raises money for the St. Vincent de Paul Society.

Lawson has also spent the past two years volunteering with Big Brothers, Big Sisters; through this program she hopes to leave a meaningful impact on the youth of her community. She recognizes the importance of leading by example; she uses her strong moral character to guide her actions then keeps ‘the good of the whole’ in mind when following through with those actions.

Lawson plans to attend the Indiana University Purdue University where she will pursue a bachelor’s degree in mathematics education. In the future, she plans to obtain a master’s degree.

These scholarships were funded by the YWCA Christian Emphasis Committee’s Barbecue Dinner fundraiser.  The YWCA board of directors and staff thank everyone who purchased dinner tickets and helped make these scholarships possible.

The YWCA is a United Way and Van Wert County Foundation funded agency. For more information, contact the YWCA at 419.238.6639.
