Victor P. Gentile

Victor P. “Vic” Gentile died at 4:41 a.m. Saturday, November 27, 2010, at the Van Wert Inpatient Hospice Center.

He was born December 31, 1919, in Detroit, Mich., the son of the late Michael and Giovannina (Carlin) Gentile. On November 8, 1975, he married Eleanor (Steinmetz) Gentile, who preceded him in death on October 12, 2007.

Mr. Gentile retired in 1985 from Central Insurance Company after 30 years of service. He was a jockey at age 15 until he entered the U.S. Army and served from 1941-1945. Mr. Gentile was with the amphibious engineers in New Guinea during World War II and was in Tokyo Bay to witness Japan’s surrender. He was a member of Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1320, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5803 and American Legion Post 178, all in Van Wert.

Survivors include as sister-in-law, Phyllis Schaadt of Fort Wayne, Ind.; one brother-in-law, Raymond Coleman of Van Wert; several nieces and nephews; anda special friend, Jane Murphy of Van Wert.

Two brothers and two sisters also preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 1, at Brickner Funeral Home in Van Wert, with the Rev. Paul W. Miller officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery in Van Wert, with graveside military rites performed by the combined honors units of Legion Post 178 and VFW Post 5803.

Calling hours are from 2-7 p.m. Tuesday, November 30, and an hour prior to services Wednesday at the funeral home.

Preferred memorials: Van Wert Inpatient Hospice Center.
