Monday Mailbag: April 8, 2019

SCOTT TRUXELL/independent sports editor

This week’s Monday Mailbag includes questions about the Wrestling State Tournament, the Cincinnati Reds, most runs scored in a high school baseball game, Parkway football and state baseball rankings.

Q: I’ve heard that the Wrestling State Tournament is moving to a Friday through Sunday format next year. Is this true? Name withheld upon request

A: I’ve heard the same chatter, but the Ohio High School Athletic Association hasn’t released any information yet. The Thursday through Saturday format has been used for decades, so it’ll be interesting to hear the reasons for the change, if it happens.

Q: What are your thoughts on the Reds so far? Name withheld upon request

A: Full disclosure, I’m a Cleveland Indians fan, so I pay more attention to the Tribe than I do Cincinnati. However, I’ve learned to keep an eye on the Reds and based on off-season moves, I thought they’d do a bit better.

However, it’s very early in the season and I don’t usually get too worked up about games in April.

Q: What is the record for most runs scored in a high school baseball game in Ohio? Name withheld upon request

A: According to the OHSAA record book, it’s 65. Yes, 65. Licking Heights defeated Canal Winchester Harvest Prep 65-0 in April of 2013.

Harvest Prep also was on the short end of a 50-0 game to Lancaster Fisher Catholic in April of 2017. That’s No. 2 on the list.

No. 3 and No. 4 are Coldwater vs. Mendon (47-0, 1941) and Coldwater vs. New Bremen (46-0, 1986).

Q: Why can’t Parkway seem to hang on to a footballl coach? Name withheld upon request

A: I’m not sure I can answer that. Last year’s coach, Dusty Rutledge, left for the University of Mississippi. He’s being reunited with Rich Rodriquez, who’s the offensive coordinator at Ole Miss. I believe the two worked together at West Virginia and Arizona.

Otherwise, I suppose wins and losses have something to do with it. Here’s hoping new head coach Joel Henkle can get things turned around.

Q: When will state baseball rankings come out? Name withheld upon request.

The weekly poll by the Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association usually comes out in mid-April.
