4-H offers livestock judging opportunity

VW independent/submitted information

Van Wert County 4-H will be hosting a start-up meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, February 12, at the Ohio State University Extension Office for youths interested in meat judging and livestock judging teams for the 4-H contests.

Interested youths are encouraged to bring a parent and calendar and explore the possibilities of these judging contests, in addition to livestock projects or as a way to learn more about animal sciences.

Meat judging allows young people to learn about the different cuts of meat, learn about muscling, trimness and quality of meat evaluation, and learn about beef, pork, and lamb production carcass grading. Youths interested in livestock judging will take a closer look at evaluating stock before processing to determine its worth (as done in the show ring).

Both judging opportunities lead to regional and state contests, as well as the potential for meaningful careers with the USDA and many privately owned companies. Youths do not need to have any prior knowledge to participate on these teams. However, participants not active in 4-H currently will need to become a member to compete in the contests.

If interested, contact the OSU Extension Office at 419.238.1214 and RSVP attendance. Those interested but are not able to attend. should let the office know as well. Questions can be emailed to Heather at gottke.4@osu.edu.
