Man faces charges in Oakwood stand-off

VW independent/submitted information

OAKWOOD — Paulding County sheriff’s deputies were called to deal with a possibly suicidal man Friday afternoon in Oakwood. Deputies were dispatched to 115 N. First St. in Oakwood at 4:52 p.m. Friday on a report of a suicidal man with a gun to his head.

Deputy Sheriff Jared Renollet arrived on scene approximately five minutes after being dispatched and encountered Ray J. Osborn, 47, of Continental, in a truck with a woman standing by the passenger door. Osborn exited the vehicle and had a pistol to his head.

The deputy told Osborn to drop his weapon, but, during the exchange between the two men, Osborn pointed his weapon toward the deputy, and Deputy Renollet then fired three rounds from his duty weapon at Osborn. No bullets struck the suspect, but did strike the driver’s window.

After the deputy fired, Osborn put his pistol inside his truck and started walking toward the deputy. Noticing the suspect no longer had a weapon, Deputy Renollet holstered his duty weapon and deployed his taser, since Osborn continued to refuse obeying his commands. The deputy and a back-up officer were then able to take Osborn into custody.

Osborn was treated and released at a local hospital and then taken to the Paulding County Jail. Charges had not yet been determined by the Prosecutor’s Office at the time of this press release.

“I am grateful no one was hurt as a result of this incident,” said Sheriff Jason K. Landers. “After viewing the scene and reviewing initial statements this could have ended much worse.

“An internal investigation will be completed to ensure Jared complied with office policy,” Sheriff Landers added. “From what I know right now he did a fantastic job.”

The incident remains under investigation.
