Decatur photo shoot spotlights sculpture

Eight Van Wert Area Photography Club members and guest, Carleigh Kaiser of Van Wert, converged on downtown Decatur, Ind., for a photo shoot Thursday, July 14.  We were also joined by two members of the Grand Lake Photography Club on this excursion, as  Randy Shellenbarger is not only the vice president of the Van Wert Club,  but also the President of the Grand Lake Club

Decatur has plenty of subjects to photograph, including 12 permanent sculptures, and 30 new ones on display both in store windows and on the sidewalks and an1873 courthouse . Starting at the courthouse, the group then split up in all directions to see what all they could capture before regrouping at the courthouse. The weather was perfect and the light was good, so a lot of images were captured.  Several club members have some of their pictures posted on their Facebook page or on the VWAPC’s Facebook page.

We’d suggest that persons wanting to know more about the sculptures Google “Sculptures in Decatur, IN” and click on “Decatur Sculpture tour/Decatur, Indiana”.  That will take you to the website of the “5th Annual Decatur Sculpture Tour”. Clicking on the “2016 Sculptures” at the top right will open information and pictures of the 30 new sculptures on display.  Clicking on “Sculptures” beside the 2016 Sculptures at the top, will reveal “Permanent Sculptures” and clicking there brings up the 12 permanent units.  Depending on your mobility and interest, allow at least 45 minutes to an hour to see and appreciate all the units in the short 4  block area.  There are curbs to negotiate.

The Van Wert Area Photography Club meets on the second Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at 114 S. Race St. in Van Wert.  Visitors are always welcome.
