With the loss, the Cougars, who lost most of their starters to graduation and several players to injury during the year, end the season at 0-23.

The two teams were tied at 9-all after eight minutes of play, but the Lady Roughriders went on a 12-3 run in the second stanza to go up by nine, 21-12, at the half. Cold shooting was the bane of the Cougars, who couldn’t buy a basket in the middle two quarters. Van Wert scored just 3 points in each of the second and third stanzas.

St. Marys also outscored the Cougars in the second half, 27-15, to ice the sectional tournament victory.

The Roughriders had three players in double figures, led by Erika Angstmann and Shania Taylor, who had 13 points each. Syd Cisco added 11 points for St. Marys.

Van Wert’s top scorers were Abby Jackson and Ella Butler, who had 7 points each.

Neither team was all that efficient on offense. St. Marys made 18 of 54 from the field (33 percent), while the Lady Cougars were 10 of 46 (22 percent).

Van Wert was 6 of 12 at the free throw line (50 percent), while the Roughriders made 9 of 19 free-throw attempts (47 percent).

St. Marys had the edge in rebounding, 34-32, while the Cougars had more turnovers, 8 to 17.
