Cougar swim teams 7th, 8th, at Napoleon

NAPOLEON — The Van Wert Cougar swim team traveled to Napoleon High School for the annual Napoleon Invitational involving 17 teams, including six Western Buckeye League schools.

The Van Wert boys took eighth place, while the girls finished seventh. Lima Shawnee took first place for the boys and Napoleon was the girls’ champion, with Napoleon runner-up for the boys and Ottawa-Glandorf runner-up in the girls’ events.

Other schools participating (in order of finish in the girls’ standings) included Bryan, Coldwater, Tiffin Calvert, Ada, Lima Bath, Maumee Valley, Wauseon, Elida, St. Marys Memorial, Leipsic, Toledo Central Catholic, and Maumee.

Highlights of the boys’ day included Sam Easley in the 100-yard butterfly earning a first place and breaking his own record; Easley also finished in seventh place in the 1-meter diving.

Also scoring for the Cougars were Dalton Heppeard in the 100-yard backstroke and 500-yard freestyle, Joe Linser in the 200-yard freestyle, and Cade Fleming in the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke.

Scoring for the Cougar girls were Maddison Jarrett earning a second place in 1-meter diving, along with Peyton Fleming in the 100-yard individual medley and 100-yard breaststroke, Landrie Koontz in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle, Haley Richardson in the 200-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle, Emma Verville in the 100-yard backstroke, Rebekah Fast in the 100-yard breaststroke, and Bethany Fast in the 100-yard IM and 100-yard breaststroke.

Both boys’ “A” relay teams scored.  The best finishes were seventh place by the 200-yard freestyle relay team (Cory Pinson, Fleming, Easley, and Linser), with a 10th place ranking by the 200-yard medley relay team (Pinson, Fleming, Easley, and Linser). The 200-yeard freestyle “B” relay (Stephen Hamblett, Andrew Hamblett, Heppeard, and Brayden Cox) also scored with a 14th place finish.

All three girls “A” relay teams scored. The best finish was recorded by the 400-yard freestyle relay team (Koontz, Katie Trittschuh, Olivia Profit, and Noelle Heffner) earning an eighth place. The 200-yard medley relay team relay team (Verville, Bethany Fast, Koontz, and Fleming) earned 10th place, with the 200-yard freestyle relay team (Fleming, Chloe Brake, Trittschuh, Bethany Fast) claiming a ninth place finish. The 400-yeard freestyle “B” relay (Brake, Verville, Rebekah Fast, and Richardson) also scored with an 11th place finish.

The next meet for the Cougars will be hosting a triple meet that includes Coldwater and Versailles on December 15.
