VW, Lady Knights lose, Lancer girls win

VW independent girls’ basketball roundup

Only one of the three girls’ basketball teams was a winner on Saturday, with Crestview and Van Wert girls going down to defeat and the Lady Lancers getting a win over Continental.

The Lady Cougars lost 57-38 to Wayne Trace in a non-league game played at home on Saturday.

Van Wert stayed close for a quarter, trailing by just a basket, 15-13, at the end of the period, but the Lady Raiders began to pull away in the second period when they outscored the Cougars 17-8 to go up by 11 points, 32-21, at the half. The score was 46-25 at the three-quarter mark.

Lady Raider Erin Mohr led all scorers with 24 points, while teammate Courtney Mead added 14 points for Wayne Trace. Cassidy Meyers was the only Cougar in double figures, with 11 points.

The Crestview Lady Knights hosted Ottoville, with the Lady Big Green coming away with a 55-37 victory.

Ottoville took a four-point lead, 12-8, in the first quarter and the game stayed close in the second period, with the Big Green outscoring Crestview 14-13 to go up by five, 26-21, at the half.

Ottoville upped its offensive efforts in the second half, outscoring the Knights 29-16 in the half to earn the non-league win.

The Big Green’s Brooke Mangas led all scorers with 17 points, including 50 percent shooting from the field (100 percent from three-point range. Bridget Landin added 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting, while going 3-of-3 at the free throw line for Ottoville. The Big Green shot 46 percent from the field (19 of 41), while also shooting 46 percent from three-point range. Ottoville hit 11 of 16 free throws (68 percent).

Crestview was led by Emily Bauer’s 12 points, while Paige Motycka added 10 points for the Lady Knights. Crestview shot 40 percent from the field (13 of 32), but made only 1 of 10 three-point attempts. The Knights were 10 of 13 from the line (76 percent).

The Lincolnview Lady Lancers hosted Continental and earned a 43-29 victory over the Lady Pirates in non-conference girls’ basketball action on Saturday.

The Lady Lancers were up by three points, 11-8, at the end of a period of play, but Continental outscored the Lancer girls 8-7 in the second quarter to trail by just a basket, 18-16, at the half. Lincolnview stepped things up, offensively, in the second half, outscoring the Pirates 25-13 for the 14-point victory.

Kayla Schimmoeller led all scorers with 13 points, while Katlyn Wendel and Olivia Gorman added 9 points apiece for Lincolnview. Amber Logan was Continental’s top scorer, with 12 points.
