ST. HENRY — The Van Wert Cougars might have wished for another weather cancellation on Saturday as the St. Henry Redskins had little trouble in handing Van Wert a 60-36 loss in non-conference boys’ basketball action.

The Redskins took a six-point lead, 11-5, in the first quarter and were up by nine, 20-11, at the half. St. Henry then doubled the score on the Cougars in the third quarter, outscoring Van Wert 20-10 to take a 21-point lead into the final quarter.

The Redskins kept Van Wert out of the paint and the Cougars had trouble connecting from three-point range, making only 3 of 14 attempts. St. Henry also had plenty of chances to score off the clock, converting 20 of 24 free throws in the game (83.3 percent), versus 5 of 8 for the Cougars (62.5 percent).

The Redskins dominated on the boards, bringing down 37 rebounds to 22 for Van Wert. Turnovers were mostly even, with St. Henry losing the ball 10 times, while the Cougars made 11 miscues.

Van Wert was 14 of 42 from the field (33.3 percent).

Jacoby Kelly led Van Wert with 16 points, the only Cougar in double figures. The Redskins were led by Ryan Mikesell’s 25 points, including 16 of 18 from the line. Evan Prenger had 9 points for St. Henry, while Mitchell Stammen added 8 points for the Redskins.

The Redskin junior varsity team also downed the Van Wert JVs, 47-36. Ryan Lautzenheiser and Korbin Taylor each 8 points to lead the Cougars, while Mitch Schwieterman was the game’s high scorer with 17 points.
