VW boys 6th, girls 12th at area swim meet

WAPAKONETA — The Cougar swim team traveled to Wapakoneta for the annual Wapak/Celina invitational involving 16 teams, including seven Western Buckeye League schools. The boys took sixth place, while the girls finished 12th. Wapakoneta took first place for the boys and girls, with Lima Shawnee runner-up for the boys and Ottawa-Glandorf runner-up in the girls’ events.

Other schools participating (in order of finish in the boys’ standings) included Celina, Ada, Van Wert, Bellefontaine, Minster, Lima Central Catholic, Benjamin Logan, Elida, Marion Local, St. Marys, New Bremen, Coldwater and Fort Recovery.

Highlights of the boys’ day included Sam Easley scoring a seventh place in the 50-yard freestyle and fifth place in the 100-yard butterfly; Kory Schlatter in the 100-yard backstroke; Josh Overholt in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle; Tyler Rex in the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard freestyle; and Cade Fleming in the 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke.

Scoring for the Cougar girls were Hannah Stemen in the 100-yard backstroke, and Bethany Fast in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Two boys’ “A” relay teams also scored. The best finishes were 200-yard freestyle “A” relay (Easley, Overholt, Fleming and Rex), earning third place and a seventh place finish by the 200-yard medley relay (Rex, Fleming, Easley and Overholt).  All three girls’ “A” relay teams scored.  The best finish was recorded by the 200-yard freestyle relay with Fast, Peyton Fleming, Katie Trittschuh and Stemen, which claimed ninth place. Also, the 400-yard freestyle with Madison Turnwald, Jaycie Rickard, Olivia Profit, and Haley Richardson earned a respectable 11th place. The 200-medley relay earned 13thplace, including swimmers Stemen, Fast, Fleming, and Trittschuh.

The next meet for the Cougars will be a dual meet at Ayersville High School on January 20.
