Large imposing wooden crates of watercolors from artists all over the world arrived early in the morning on the very last day of 2014. We can’t wait finish opening them, it’s like a second Christmas. The contents of these crates contain the 147th Annual International Traveling Exhibition of the American Watercolor Society. This show will open on Saturday, January 24, in the Wendel gallery at the Wassenberg Art Center. Like all exhibits it is free and open to the public. Regular gallery hours are Tuesday – Sunday 1-5 p.m. and will be on view until February 22. A free and open-to-the-public reception is also planned for 7–9 p.m. on January 24, and will feature a concert by international blues musician Radoslav Lorković. www.radoslavlorkovic.com. Lorković, born in Zagreb, Croatia moved to the U.S. at as a child and at age 20 began touring with Bo Ramsey and the Sliders. Since then his full career has taken him all over the world from small stages to large venues such as the Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall. Free Hors d’oeuvres, and spirits will be available for purchase.

The AWS annual is one of the premiere watercolor exhibits in the world and throughout its history has had notable artists included in their ranks such as Andrew Wyeth, Charles Burchfield, Childe Hassam and Edward Hopper. In 2014 more than 1,200 artists from throughout the United States and a dozen foreign countries submitted their work to a panel of jurors chosen from signature members of the AWS. Of these submissions (one per artist), 138 paintings were selected for the exhibition. Forty paintings from the show are selected for the Traveling Exhibition, which will tour museums and galleries across the country during the next year of which the Wassenberg is a part.
