Cougar swimmers split meet with Kenton

KENTON — The Van Wert High School boys’ and girls’ swimming teams traveled to the Hardin County YMCA to compete in a dual meet against Kenton high School. The Cougar boys were victorious over Kenton (107-51), but the girls lost a hard-fought battle to the Wildcats (70-98).

Swimmers placing first in individual events included Hannah Stemen (100-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke), Tyler Rex (100-yard butterfly and 100-yard backstroke), Sam Easley (50-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle), Cade Fleming (200-yard individual medley and 100-yard freestyle) and Josh Overholt (200-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke).

Three Van Wert relays finished in first place:

• 200 Medley Relay:  boys  (1:57.83–Kory Schlatter, Josh Overholt, Sam Easley, Tyler Rex)
• 200 Freestyle Relay: boys (1:51.22–Josh Overholt, Dalton Heppeard, Nathan Ireland, Cade Fleming)
• 400 Freestyle Relay: boys (3:55.99 –Cade Fleming, Kory Schlatter, Tyler Rex, Sam Easley)

The Cougar swimmers will compete again, Saturday, when they head to Wapakoneta for the Celina-Wapak Invitational.
