Vernon O. Pond, 101, of Scott, died at 8:43 a.m. Tuesday, November 18, 2014, at Country Inn Living Center in Latty.

He was born November 8, 1913, in Van Wert County, the son of the late Omar and Myrtle (Weyer) Pond. On May 4, 1936, he married Ruth (Mosier) Pond, who survives.

American Flag for obituaries 6-2011Other survivors include four children, Maxine Pond of Van Wert, Milford (Sherri) Pond of San Diego, California, Roger (Marianne Rentz) Pond of Seal Beach, California, and Fred (Marcia) Pond of Scott; two half-brothers, Ray (Nancy) Pond of Tallahassee, Florida, and Richard Pond of Chattahoochee, Florida; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

A sister, Dorothy Foust; and three half-sisters, Aileen Barley, Mary Pond and Eleanor Long, also preceded him in death.

Vernon was a lifetime farmer and second-generation owner of Pond Seed Company in Scott.

Vernon was proud of his family, and his biggest wish was that they would all have a college degree, which he lived to see become a reality.  Then he started working on the grandchildren and they are on their way. Vernon loved visiting with people. In his later years, he loved to sit in one of the chairs in front of Pond Seed Company and talk with everyone who came by. Vernon Pond thought Scott, Ohio, was the center of the universe! He was a graduate of Haviland High School, was a 32nd degree Mason and member of Van Wert Masonic Lodge, KYC of Honor, Zenobia Shrine Temple, a past president of Scott Lions Club, a former member of the Paulding National Guard, served on the Scott Equity Exchange Board of Directors, and was past president of both the Ohio and International Flying Farmers Association. He also attended International Business College in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

A Masonic funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, November 22, at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home & Crematory in Van Wert. A private family burial will be take place at Scott Cemetery.

Calling hours are from noon-3 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
