Weekend roundup: boys hoops, wrestling

Crestview and Lincolnview were in action in non-conference boys’ basketball action on Saturday, while wrestling teams from Van Wert and Lincolnview were in action at two different invitationals.

Crestview 58 Celina 46

CELINA — Kalen Etzler poured in 31 points and pulled down eight rebounds, and Crestview won the for third time in three games by defeating Celina 58-46 on Saturday.

The 2021 Ohio State University commit hit 11 baskets, went 5-7 beyond the three point arc and was 4-5 from the foul line. One of Etzler’s baskets was a vicious, soaring slam dunk in the lane in the fourth quarter.

Brody Brecht and Kaden Short each scored seven points and Carson Kreischer and JJ Ward each finished with six.

As a team, Crestview was 22-39 (56 percent) from the floor, including 7-13 from three point range and 7-14 from the free throw line.

The Knights led 10-7 after the first quarter and 28-21 at halftime, then Crestview extended the advantage to 45-35 after three quarters.

Ethan Wilson led Celina (2-13) with 16 points, while Max Thobe finished with 15. The Bulldogs were 12-29 from the floor and 17-21 from the foul line and were outrebounded by Crestview 21-19.

Crestview (7-9) will host Lima Central Catholic on Friday and will travel to Hicksville on Saturday.

Parkway 69 Lincolnview 61

The Parkway trio of Dylan Hughes, Caleb Kinney and Caden Slusher combined for 62 points and the Panthers defeated Lincolnview 69-61 on Saturday.

Hughes scored 23 points and pulled down 20 rebounds, Kinney had 20 points and six rebounds and Slusher finished with 19 points to help Parkway improve to 11-5.

In addition, the Panthers finished with a commanding 41-19 edge on the boards.

Lincolnview (7-8) was led by Creed Jesse’s 16 points and five rebounds, followed by Jake Bowersock (15 points) and Aaron Cavinder (12 points). Clayton Leeth netted eight points.

Parkway jumped out to a 21-9 lead at the end of one quarter then the visitors enjoyed a 39-20 halftime advantage. The Lancers trimmed it to 54-39 after three quarters and after a late fourth quarter trey by Cavinder, Lincolnview trailed by just three, 63-60. However, the Panthers were able to convert 6-8 foul shots from the there to secure the win.

The Lancers were 24-51 (47 percent) from the floor and 3-7 from the free throw line, while Parkway finished 23-53 (43 percent) from the floor and 16-25 from the foul line. The Panthers had five turnovers and Lincolnview turned the ball over just four times.

The Lancers will host Delphos Jefferson on Friday then will travel to Delphos St. John’s on Saturday. Parkway will host St. Henry on Friday then will entertain Oregon Cardinal Stritch the following night.

Wrestling

Van Wert eighth at Wapakoneta Invitational

WAPAKONETA — Van Wert had three runner up finishers and the Cougars placed eighth out of 12 teams at the Wapakoneta Invitational on Saturday.

In the 145 pound championship match, Van Wert’s Gabe Steyer was pinned in 1:22 by Conner, Kentucky’s Jacob Grandstaff. Despite the loss, Steyer set a new school record for wins (146) and earlier in the day, he set a season record for technical falls (16), with four of those coming on Saturday.

At 152 pounds, Macein Bigham lost in the finals via a 15-7 major decision to Conner’s Stanley Crawley, and in the 285 pound finals, Eli Kline was pinned by Napoleon’s Demitrius Hernandez in 2:24.

Cougar wrestler Killian Sudduth finished fourth in the 120 pound weight class after losing a 15-2 major decision to Napoleon’s Claude Buckmaster.

Conner edged Napoleon for the team title 264.5 to 262, while Celina finished third (196.5) and the host Redskins fourth (168).

Lancers at LCC Thunderbird Invitational

LIMA – Lincolnview finished 38th out of 41 teams at the Thunderbird Invitational, held Friday and Saturday at Lima Central Catholic High School.

No Lancer wrestlers placed in the top eight of any of the weight classes at the massive tournament.

Waynedale won the team title with 246.5 points, while Allen East was the runner-up (229.5 points).
