Welch awarded Elks legacy scholarship

Van Wert Lodge 1197, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, has announced the awarding of a $4,000 Legacy Award Scholarship by the Elks National Foundation to Katelyn Welch. The Legacy Award Scholarships are awarded by the Elks National Foundation and are only available to children and grandchildren of Elk members.

Welch graduated this spring from Van Wert High School and will be attending Wright State University this fall majoring in biomedical engineering, with a focus on pre-medicine to become an anesthesiologist.

During high school, she was a member of the VWHS Student Council, FCA, French Club, yearbook staff, Prom Committee, cheer for football and basketball, Beta Club, Service Pack, Scarlet Squad, a Junior Rotarian, a member of the Concert Choir and Select Choir, Elk “Student of the Month” in January, VWHS peony pageant representative who was second runner-up and talent winner.

Welch attends First Presbyterian Church in Van Wert and is also active in 4-H, where she served as club president, was 2015 Van Wert Fair Rabbit Queen, was recognized as a dance representative for a New York City Gala with Dr. Oz in May of this year, was honored as a Hollywood DJ National Dancer and an All Star Cheerleader at Van Wert All Star Cheer.

She resides on South Washington Street in Van Wert and is the daughter of Rob and Jacque Welch.

Welch, along with her parents, was recognized during the Van Wert Lodge Youth Recognition Breakfast on May 3.

The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks is only second to the United States government in the number of scholarships awarded each year. Van Wert Lodge is proud to have been a sponsor for Welch during this competition.
