Alexandra Kleman has had two pieces accepted in the Scholastic Art & Writing Competition. She received both a Gold Key and a Silver Key award. The Gold Metal entry continues on in national competition to the New York headquarters where it may be chosen to be shown at a New York museum. In the meantime, her artwork will be exhibited at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art. Exhibition dates are from Feb. 10 – April 7. She will individually be honored on stage during the Regional Awards Ceremony at the Grand Wayne Center, 120 West Jefferson Boulevard, Fort Wayne on Sunday, Feb. 10, at 1 p.m.

This is a respected and difficult competition to have pieces accepted into and be given an award. There were well over several thousand entries from hundreds of high schools in our region. These schools include the art magnet schools as well as Lima, Findlay, Toledo and Fort Wayne High Schools.

Lincolnview freshman, Marcy Shoppell, was also recently awarded the Gold Key award by the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards for her memoir titled “My Special Guardian on Earth” during regional competition. The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards are put on by the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers for students in grades seven through twelve. By earning the highest level of achievement in the fifty-two county area, Marcy’s work will qualify her for national competition.

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards continues to be the longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in the U.S., and the largest source of scholarships for young artists and writers. It is celebrating its ninetieth anniversary. The alumni includes artists like Andy Warhol, Philip Pearlstein, and Cy Twombly, writers Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, and Joyce Carol Oates, photographer Richard Avedon, actors Frances Farmer, Robert Redford, Alan Arkin, and John Lithgow, filmmakers Stan Brakhage, Ken Burns, and Ned Vizzini, and many more.

Also taking the Greenhand Quiz were Carter Gorman, Lincoln Schaffner, Jacob Gibson, Joey Frank, Cole Schmersal, Hunter Blankemeyer, Braden Thatcher, Savannah Bigham, Catlyn Richey, Cammie Marbaugh, and Parker Selascott. They all placed in the Top 20 percent in the State.
