Recently the Sixth-Grade, Core 2, Language Arts class on Team Storm at Van Wert Middle School conducted a clothing drive to donate slightly used clothing to the Van Wert Goodwill. During their campaign, the students collected close to 800 pounds of clothing.
The clothing drive was in conjunction with the Language Arts Genius Project which allows students the freedom to learn about topics that are of interest to them. This project was one of three that are currently taking place this trimester. Other projects that are being conducted include a fundraiser for the American Red Cross and a Dog & Cat Food Drive for the Van Wert County Humane Society.
The French 2 classes at Van Wert High School recently celebrated Mardi Gras with Mary Yackey’s first grade class at St. Mary’s Elementary School by sharing the books that they made about Mardi Gras celebrations in different French speaking countries.
The French classes were divided into groups and chose one French speaking country to research, including Martinique, Quebec, Haiti, as well as several others. Next, each group wrote a story and designed a children’s book. They were read their books in French to the first graders, and then translated the stories into English.
The French students finished their presentation by teaching the first graders how to count in French as well as conversational French words.
