Monday Mailbag: tourney sites and more

SCOTT TRUXELL/independent sports editor

This week’s Monday Mailbag includes questions about tournament sites, Dayton Chaminade Julienne, Sunday championship games and Van Wert and Antwerp.

Q: It doesn’t seem fair that Bowling Green got to play a regional semifinal game at their home stadium. Can’t something be done to prevent this in the future? Name withheld upon request

A: It’s just one of those things. For various reasons, suitable sites for regional baseball games are few and far between.

Bowling Green has a fine facility and it just so happened their team qualified for regionals. The only option was to move the game, but that really wasn’t an option if you know what I mean.

Q: What do you know about Van Wert’s next opponent? Name withheld upon request

A: The Cougars will play Dayton Chaminade Julienne in the Division II state semifinals at 1 p.m. Saturday at Canal Park in Akron.

At this moment, I know the Eagles are the defending state champions after beating Wapakoneta in last year’s finals, and I know they’re ranked No. 1 by a wide margin in the final statewide poll.

Look for more on Dayton Chaminade Julienne in the coming days.

Q: Did I read it correctly? Are state championship baseball games being played on Sunday instead of Saturday? Name withheld upon request

A: You did indeed read it correctly. Division III and IV state semifinal games will be played on Friday, while Division I and II will play Saturday. All four championship games will be played on Sunday, June 9.

Of course, that’s assuming that the weather cooperates. Hopefully, there won’t be a repeat of this past Saturday in Akron.

Q: Who has had a more incredible year athletically – Van Wert or Antwerp? Name withheld upon request

A: I’ll say both have enjoyed a stellar school year athletically.
