Cougars shut out No. 1 Coldwater 2-0

COLDWATER — In a matchup of state ranked baseball teams, No. 3 Van Wert (Division II) knocked off No. 1 Coldwater (Division III) 2-0 on Tuesday and in the process, the Cougars set a school record for wins in a single season with 21.

Owen Treece scattered four hits over five inningsm and Hayden Maples went the final two innings and didn’t allow a hit, while striking out one.

The Cougars scored their runs in the third and seventh innings. Keaton Brown crossed home plate on a grounder by Jaxson Amweg in the third, and Jake Lautzenheiser scored on a passed ball in the final inning.

Nathan Temple and Parker Conrad each had two of Van Wert’s seven hits.

The Cougars will host Wapakoneta or Kenton in the sectional finals at 5 p.m. on Friday.
