Random Thoughts: Lancers and more

SCOTT TRUXELL/independent sports editor

This week’s Random Thoughts center around Mother Nature, a rematch, the Elida district, Wayne Trace, Kareem Hunt and a new pro football league.

Mother Nature says no

Apparently, Mother Nature didn’t want Lincolnview and Antwerp to play this season, which is a shame, because it likely would have been an entertaining game.

The two teams were scheduled to meet on January 19 but it was postponed until yesterday, then was called off due to impending weather conditions.

The game won’t be rescheduled.

Lincolnview-Parkway II

In my mind, the Division IV boys’ sectional semifinal pairing between Lincolnview and Parkway is the most intriguing.

Parkway won the recent regular season matchup 80-63 but I’m thinking the game will be much closer the second time around, with the winner facing Kalida for the sectional title.

Elida district

The Division IV district at Elida is no joke. Crestview, Kalida, Ottoville and Wayne Trace are the top four seeds. Throw in the likes of No. 5 seed Delphos St. John’s, No. 6 seed Lima Central Catholic, No. 7 seed Lincolnview and No. 8 seed Parkway and it becomes apparent that it could be a real dogfight.

Wayne Trace

It seems fair to call this week “Championship Week” at Wayne Trace High School.

The girls’ basketball team will finish the regular season at home against Hicksville on Thursday. A win would give the Lady Raiders an outright Green Meadows Conference championship. However, a loss could force a tri-championship with Fairview, Holgate and/or Ayersville.

On Friday, the boys counterparts will play at Hicksville. A win by Hicksville (17-1, 6-0 GMC) would clinch an outright GMC title for the Aces, but a Wayne Trace (14-5, 5-1 GMC) win would force a co-championship between the two schools.

Kareem Hunt

The Cleveland Browns signed former Kansas City Chiefs running back Kareem Hunt to a one year deal on Monday.

Hunt was released by the Chiefs during the 2018 season after video emerged showing him punching and kicking a woman.

As expected, news of the signing wasn’t well received. I believe in second chances, but I’m not sure I agree with this. Regardless, he’ll almost certainly receive some sort of multiple game suspension by the NFL.

New pro football league

Like roughly three million other people, I was curious enough to watch some of the new American Alliance of Football (AAF) over the weekend.

For those who don’t know, the AAF is an eight team league with teams in the south and west.

This is a clear step down from the NFL, but the league isn’t trying to compete with the big boys. I’m interested to see how many people are still watching these games mid and late season. History hasn’t been kind to previous pro leagues.
