Local March for Our Lives event planned

VW independent/submitted information

This Saturday, March 24, community members will gather for a “sibling march” as part of the March for Our Lives movement.

The march is one of hundreds happening around the country planned by students and survivors of gun violence in communities big and small, in all 50 states. The march will take place from 10 a.m. until noon and will start near the YWCA on Main Street in Van Wert and end with a rally in Fountain Park.

Area residents are welcome to join the peaceful demonstration that will include speakers, voter registration, informational handouts, and light refreshments in exchange for a freewill donation. Proceeds go to the National March for Our Lives organization.

The march is a nonpartisan event that is inclusive to everyone no matter their age, political affiliation, or what they think causes gun violence. At the rally, many key issues will be discussed, including mental health, public safety, and gun laws.

Speakers and the public will discuss why it seems impossible for persons on both side of the gun control argument to have a mature discussion.

This is an opportunity for a peaceful, constructive talk between Second Amendment advocates and people who want to see a change in policymaking at the state and national level.

Any young person who wants to share their thoughts is encouraged to speak for a few minutes. The event is not a protest — instead, it is an opportunity to keep the conversation concerning gun violence going and to spark change to help keep students safe at school.

Students Demand Action-Van Wert County is a group that was created to encourage discussion among students, parents, and other members of the community on key issues facing America today.
