L’view makes 2 Rivals United donations

VW independent/submitted information

The United Way Board, in an effort to thank Rivals United schools Lincolnview and Crestview, wanted to allow the students who helped in the success of this year’s contest determine what organizations would benefit from some extra donations.

Lincolnview and Crestview each received $1,000 to “give back” to the organizations of their choice.

Lincolnview has chosen to give $500 to its Latchkey Program and $500 to the Middle Point Ballpark.

The Middle Point Ballpark is going to use the $500 to replace old equipment that has been used for years. “The extra donation was a great surprise,” said Kevin Price, Middle Point Ballpark Board president.

Lincolnview Latchkey Program director Rhonda Longstreth said that program would like to use the money to replenish its Legos toys and help with the purchase of a new bench made through the ABC Program. The benches derive from the “cap and lid program” — specifically designed by schoolchildren to be used by schoolchildren.

The cost of an 8-foot bench is around $275 and it is made using discarded colorful caps and lids. The manufacturing company will only make the benches for kids’ programs, and the kids get to assist by sorting the lids.

Longstreth said that it was great that the kids decided where they wanted to give the money to.

“It is a great example of kids helping kids,” she noted.

Lincolnview noted that, in keeping with the underlying message of giving back, it is teaching students, staff, and community what that feels like to do so.

Rivals United brought in $32,840.19 for United Way.
