CONVOY — The Crestview Local Board of Education formally accepted the resignation of superintendent Mike Estes during Monday night’s monthly meeting.

Estes, who has led the district for 10 years, announced his intentions to not renew his contract with the district late last year. His final day is scheduled to be July 31. The Putnam County Educational Service Center is aiding the district in the search for a new superintendent.

Board members also heard from district resident Bill Dowler, who asked if they were in favor of wind farms and wind power. Dowler noted the district reaps financial benefits from existing wind farms.

“It just seems like the people who are bashing the wind projects in general are parents who have children in this school district who are benefiting from the money that the wind farms are giving,” Dowler stated. “They’re biting the hand that feeds them.”

Board president John Auld said contract negotiations will begin later this month with the Crestview Education Association. The current three-year contract with union teachers is scheduled to expire at the end of the school year.

In other business, the board announced the school system will offer district parents the opportunity to provide recommendations and suggestions for special educational services. Interested parents can meet with Program Services Director Keith Rydell on Tuesday, March 13, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., in the high school conference room or by scheduling an appointment.

A public session will be held at the March board meeting to consider public input on the rehiring of district employees Jeff Bagley and Owen Pugh for the 2018-2019 school year, with action to be taken at the April board meeting.

Crestview school board members approved the 2018-2019 school calendar and the board appproved three volunteer coaches for the middle school softball team — Julie Figley, Lori Hammons, and Nicole Kirkpatrick.

The next regular meeting of the Crestview Board of Education is scheduled for Monday, March 26, at 6 p.m. in the district boardroom.
