Wolfrum wins, Yarger edges out Kennedy

DAVE MOSIER/independent editor

Ohio Governor John Kasich apparently won the state’s Republican nomination, while Todd Wolfrum received the GOP nod for Van Wert County commissioner and Eva Yarger had a 69-vote plurality over incumbent Charles Kennedy for the Republication nomination for county prosecutor.

Election 2016 3-2016Kasich also won Van Wert County, although the vote was fairly close: 2,686 votes for Kasich to 2,235 for Donald Trump. Ted Cruz was third in the county with 1,387 votes.

Hillary Clinton easily won the county’s Democratic vote, beating Bernie Sanders 710 to 619. Roque De La Fuente was a distant third with 36 votes.

Wolfrum nearly doubled the vote count on challenger Staci Kaufman, superintendent of Vantage Career Center. The incumbent commissioner received 4,393 votes (65.08 percent) to 2,357 for Kaufman (34.92 percent).

The race for county prosecutor was much closer, with challenger Yarger garnering 3,380 votes to 3,311 for Kennedy. Elections Director Linda Stutz said there were also some student and provisional votes yet to be counted, so the total could be closer yet.

To some, Kennedy’s loss, if it holds up, could be construed as a sort of justice, since the incumbent prosecutor today reportedly handed a pink slip to Yarger, an assistant in the prosecutor’s office, telling her she was fired, effective Friday.

While not close enough for an automatic recount — at this time — a recount may be requested, especially if the ballots yet to be tabulated close the gap even more.

In somewhat of a surprising result, incumbent State Representative Tony Burkley could have been hurt by his opponent’s labeling him as a “career politician,” as well as his stance on wind energy and his co-sponsorship of House Bill 190. Burkley lost to Riedel in Van Wert County 3,610 to 2,772.

Other contested primary election results, in Van Wert County, are as follows:

Former Ohio governor Ted Strickland received the Democratic U.S. Senate nomination in the county, with 991 votes to 239 for Kelli Prather, and 54 votes for P.G. Sittenfeld.

U.S. Senator Rob Portman won the GOP nomination in the county with 4,883 votes, to 1,258 for challenger Don Elijah Eckhart.

Cheryl Buckland won the Republican nod for State Central Committeewoman over Cheryl Blakely, 2,608-2,534.

William R. Zimmerman won the county’s nod in the Republican primary for Ohio Third District Court of Appeals judge, with 3,160 votes, to 1,479 for challenger Amy Ikerd, and 529 for Richard Henry Palau.

A Sunday liquor sales issue in Van Wert Precinct 1A passed 70-28, while a similar issue in Delphos’s Precinct 4A also won 72-40.
