Betty Anspach

Betty Anspach, 74, of Van Wert and Nokomis, Florida, lost her courageous battle with liver cancer on Monday, August 10, 2015, in Sarasota, Florida.

She was born August 14, 1940, in Van Wert County to Myron and Rachael Thornell Hunter, who both preceded her in death. On June 2, 1957, she married Kenneth “Ken” Anspach, who survives.

She is survived by daughters Cynthia (Dan) Hesseling of Van Wert and Melanie (Dan Macias) Cavinder of Decatur, Indiana; seven grandchildren, Jessica (Tim) Barr of Kent, Melissa (Nathan) Sinning of Okinawa, Angela (Edward) Herber of Yoder, Indiana, Derek Laux of Salt Lake City, Utah, Beth Cavinder of North Miami, Florida, Becky (Milo Rison) Cavinder and Cathy Cavinder, both of Decatur; 13 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Stanley (Jean) Hunter of Miran, Kentucky, Lowell (Dona) Hunter of Wolcottville, Indiana, and Merrill Hunter of Ligonier, Indiana; two sisters, Ruby (Steve) Teeple of Bradenton, Florida, and Bonita (Harold) Burtner of Muncie, Indiana; a sister-in-law, Nancy (Rodney) Hunter of LaGrange, Indiana; several nieces, nephews and several stepgrandchildren.

Two brothers, Leslie Hunter and Rodney Hunter, also preceded her in death.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Van Wert and Venice/Nokomis United Methodist Church in Nokomis, Florida, and was a member of the choir in both churches. Her musical talents and enthusiasm are a legacy to her family. Betty was a member of the Order of Eastern Star in Van Wert, where she served as worthy matron several times. She also served as deputy grand matron of the Grand Chapter of Ohio. She retired from Central Mutual Insurance Company in 2001.

Above all else was her love of family, and she never lost sight of the relationship of the family unit. Betty was always encouraging all to do their best in whatever they were doing, and never let grandchildren leave the house hungry. She had a tremendous greeting card ministry that will always be remembered by many.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 29, at First United Methodist Church, with Pastor Gus Christo-Baker officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Rockford at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Calling hours are from 2-8 p.m. Friday, August 28, at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home & Crematory in Van Wert, with an Eastern Star service at 7:30 that evening, and an hour prior to services Saturday at the church.

Preferred memorials: The Salvation Army or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
