Every student should have the opportunity to learn computer science. It helps nurture problem-solving skills, logic and creativity. By starting early, students will have a foundation for success in any 21st-century career path. Kris Tow and Liz Gerdeman incorporated time into their schedule beginning in March to introduce a combination of keyboarding skills along with computer science skills to their first grade classes.  Once a week, under the guidance of Deb Stetler, the students worked on the fundamentals of keyboarding – proper posture and hand position, key terms such as home row, as well as computer science skills.

The course used to teach computer science skills to the students was designed to allow early readers to create computer programs that will help them learn to collaborate with others, develop problem-solving skills, and persist through difficult talks. By the end of the course, the students can create their very own custom game or story that they can share. This collaboration is something that both teachers are planning on continuing next year starting in September for the entire year.

Parents, if you are looking for an easy, fun way to keep your child’s reading skills sharp this summer, check out the new downloadable “Beach Bags” for K-3 and the first ever virtual Camp INFOhio for grades 4-6. The Beach Bags feature stories and activities that let children practice reading skills while learning about careers and helping the environment.

Camp INFOhio contains five days of reading, activities, and experiments focused on STEAM topics. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Math. Kids can try their hadn at code breaking, conduct science experiments with items they find in the kitchen, learn about roller coasters before designing their own, and create their own musical instruments. The Beach Bags and Camp INFOhio are offered free to all Ohio families and schools by INFOhio and the Ohio Department of Education. Find them all by going to www.infohio.org and clicking Summer Fun in the what’s new box.
