Music, literature and art strong in Lancerland

On Feb. 17 the high school band had the honor of working with Dane Newlove, retired director from St. Mary’s Memorial High School. Newlove worked with the students for two periods assisting them in preparation for their large group performance, which will take place on Saturday, March 7, at Celina High School. Students will be performing Cougar Mountain March, Along the Caney Fork, and Nathan Hale Trilogy beginning promptly at 2:45 p.m. in the high school gymnasium. This performance is, as all Lincolnview high school band performances are, open to the public. A very special thank you to Dane Newlove for coming to share his knowledge and teaching!

This year in celebration of Read Across America and Dr. Seuss’s birthday, Lincolnview Elementary has chosen “Oh the Places You’ll Go When You Read!” as the theme for their celebration.  On March 3, students K-6 will be participating in a dress-up day as something they want to be when they grow up.  Each student will also enjoy special Dr. Seuss decorated cookies as a treat.  The students have worked on a display for the hall themed after the book “Oh, the Places You’ll Go” with hot air balloons and a writing exercise describing what they want to be.  A special reading of the book will also occur during the day for the students.  Be sure and stop in and see the wonderful display.

On Feb. 8 at the Grand Wayne Center in Fort Wayne, Ind., Lincolnview/Vantage junior Marcy Shoppell was recognized at the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards Ceremony for the third year in a row. This event has become the nation’s largest source of scholarships for creative teen artists and writers and is the nation’s longest running and prestigious recognition program for students in grades 7-12. This year a record was broken for the total number of entries ever with 1,697 pieces of writing being submitted from 52 counties in Northeast Indiana and Northwest Ohio. Marcy was talented enough to earn one of these awards with her piece titled, “The Countdown,” which earned her the second highest honor, the Silver Key.
