John Patrick McCarthy, 88, of Van Wert, died at 12:13 p.m. Thursday, December 11, 2014, at Vancrest Health Care Center in Van Wert.

He was born December 31, 1925, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, a son of James and Patrick and Hazel (Sweeney) McCarthy, who both are deceased. On June 27, 1953, he married Margaret (Blasko) McCarthy, who died January 24, 2012.

American Flag for obituaries 6-2011Survivors include three sons and a daughter, Michael J. (Suzanne) McCarthy of Lewis Center, James “Jim” (Jennifer) McCarthy of Mariemont, Anne E. (Jack) Moses of Palo Alto, California, and Patrick J. McCarthy of Cincinnati; eight grandchildren, Sean (Melissa) McCarthy, Jared McCarthy, Erin Schmidt, Graham McCarthy, Nicholas McCarthy, Jackson Moses, Same Moses and Tucker Moses; two great-grandchildren, Ella McCarthy and John McCarthy; a brother, James McCarthy; and one sister, Mary LeBlanc.

A sister, Catherine McCarthy, also preceded him in death.

Mr. McCarthy was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Van Wert, where he had been an usher for many years. He had served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a member of American Legion Post 178 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5803, both in Van Wert. He was also a member of Elks Lodge 1197 in Van Wert. Earlier, he had worked on several Habitat for Humanity homes and was a longtime employee of Aeroquip Corporation.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 19, at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, with Father Stanley Szybka officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery in Van Wert, with graveside military honors performed by the combined units of Legion Post 178 and VFW Post 5803.

Calling hours are from 2-4 and 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, December 18, at Brickner Funeral Home in Van Wert, where a Rosary service will be held at 8:30 that evening. Following the cemetery service, a luncheon reception will be held in the St. Mary’s Church hall.

Preferred memorials: American Cancer Society and Honor Flight.
