June Art Exhibit is open through July 6

The opening reception for the 58th Annual June Art Exhibit was held here at the new Wassenberg Art Center on Saturday, June 14. Dan Dickerson & the Harp Condition from Fort Wayne performed all evening with complicated loops and hoop and fire dancers performed in honor of some of the best visual artists in our area.

The following artists won awards: Van Wert County Foundation Grand Award ($400) was presented to Douglas Fiely of Stryker for his acrylic painting entitled Morning Doves. The Charles F. Wassenberg Award ($250): Isaac Smith, Bowling Green, Florentine Violinist – Graphite, David Humphreys Miller Award ($100): Austin Cartwright, Fort Wayne for Pieced Together Yellow – Oil, Douglas Edward Koch Memorial Award ($250): Jaye Bumbaugh, Lima, Crows Watching the German Crow Airforce -Watercolor & Ink.

Also, the Gertrude Sluterbeck Memorial Award ($50) went to: Isaac Smith, Bowling Green for Antique Table – Charcoal, Marguerite Fryer Award ($100): Tom Emerine, Middle Point, Rhythm of the Heart – Ceramic. Gregg, Luginbuhl of Bluffton was awarded the Vera Woodruff Wassenberg Award ($200) for his stoneware piece, Rustic Decanter XVIII. Allen Hutton of Toledo won the Marilla Connors Award ($90) for his watercolor, Opposition. A new memorial award honoring the late Pat Pancake of Van Wert was presented to Isaac Smith for his pastel, Dragon Hiding Behind Barn. Valerie, Escobedo of Findlay won the Robin Carol Cartwright Memorial Award ($75) for her charcoal drawing entitled, Lauren. Three (3) Wassenberg Art Center Awards valued at $50 each were awarded to: Laura Barnhardt Corle of Findlay, Jordi Nagel, New Bremen and Leslie Rohr Scherer, Tiffin.

Honorable Mentions went to: Melissa Eddings Mancuso – Ada, Meghan Hager – Tipp City, Mike Huffman – Lima and Mackenzie Kozumplik – Sherwood. We wish to congratulate and thank the artists who participate in this highly competitive exhibit. We also wish to thank our sponsors who help make it happen, Van Wert Federal Savings Bank, Taylor Auto Sales and the Van Wert County Foundation. The exhibit will be on view through July 6.

Don’t forget to sign up your budding artist for Summer Camp at the Wass! Scheduled for the first week in July, instructor Diane Bendele, a retired art teacher from Delphos will head the Lakota/Sioux themed camp. We will study war ponies and some of the artwork and cultural influences by the First Americans. In addition, students will learn about David Humphreys Miller, an artist and Van Wert native who painted and interviewed 72 survivors of the Battle of Little Bighorn. Ages 6-10 will have camp from 10 a.m. to noon and students 11-15 will be scheduled from 1 to 3 p.m. on July 7–11. Call and sign your young artist up soon! Cost per student is $30 members/$35 non-members.

Classic Watercolor class continues on Tuesday mornings starting at 10 a.m. This is an ongoing class is taught by Pat Rayman. Persons are encouraged to jump in anytime and the class is sold in monthly increments. $35 for members and $40 for non-members.

Sign up for Vine & Palette soon. We only have a few openings left for July’s event. The evening includes all painting materials and your first glass of wine. Additional glasses of wine can be purchased for a nominal charge. Participants may bring a snack to share if they wish. We take care of the rest. Wear a paint shirt or apron to protect your clothes. $25 for members and $30 for non-members.
