On Sunday, March 9, our harbinger of spring, the colorful Ohio Watercolor Society traveling exhibit, will open at the Wassenberg Art Center. The opening reception will be held from 1–5 p.m. and refreshments will be served. Stop in and soak up this much needed color and almost feel the warmth as the color leaps of the paper and into our world. The Ohio Watercolor Society is the culmination of an annual competition of the best watercolorists in Ohio and a few surrounding states. Winners of this completion are then eligible to compete in the national level American Watercolor Exhibit, which will also be featured here early next year. This is the best of the best right here in our corner of the state, Van Wert.

There is still time to register for our newest program, ArtReach, but spaces are filling up fast. We will begin hosting this weekly after school art program on Thursday, March 6. Van Wert schools will provide after-school bus service to the Goedde Building. Art instructor Diane Bendele will then meet the students for the short walk to the Wassenberg Art Center. While Van Wert Schools provide transportation, all youth ages 7-12 are welcome to attend. ArtReach will last until 5 p.m. and parents can then pick up their children. We will provide a snack. You may call us, sign up online or your child will be bringing a form and permission slip home from school.

Classic Watercolor class on Tuesday mornings, 10 a.m.-noon, is an ongoing Watercolor class taught by Pat Rayman. Persons are encouraged to jump in anytime and the class is sold in 4-class increments.

Atmospheric Acrylics, taught by Pat Rayman, will commence on Friday, April 5, 10 a.m.-noon. Emphasis will be placed on painting atmospheric conditions, such as fog and moonlight. Cost of the class will be $35 members/$40 non-members. Additional information will be available shortly through print and via our website.

Our pilot Vine & Palette painting event was held last week as a corporate team building exercise with Central Mutual Insurance customer service department.  It was a big hit, with all 22 participants taking home a painting of spring flowers that they painted themselves.

Taught by both Matt Temple and me, our second Vine & Palette event was held this past Tuesday evening and was filled to capacity!  The next Vine & Palette will be held on April 8. Participants are encouraged to bring a friend and a bottle of wine to share and we’ll take care of the rest. At the end of the evening even persons who “can’t draw a straight line” will take home a completed painting and will be surprised at how skillful with the brush everyone can be. Class time runs 6:30-9:30 p.m. We provide paints, canvas, brushes and your first glass of wine. You will need a paint shirt or apron to protect your clothes.

The Wassenberg Art Center is located at 214 S. Washington St. (former Van Wert Armory). For information, call 419.238.6837, e-mail info@wassenbergartcenter.org, or visit the website at wassenbergartcenter.org.  Hours during exhibits are Tuesday through Sunday, 1-5 p.m.
