Achievements abound in Lancerland

On Saturday, March 8, Bethany Martinez, an 8th grader, will be representing Lincolnview in the District 3 Junior High Honors Band in Wapakoneta. Bethany was chosen for her spot, in this excellent group of students from around the District 3 area, through a selection process that included a director’s recommendation. The District 3 Honors Band for Junior High is an annual event in which a guest conductor is brought in to work with students on Friday evening and Saturday during the day, culminating with a performance Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. in the Wapakoneta High School Performing Arts Center. This year Dr. Galen Karriker, Director of Bands and Professor of Music at The University of Akron will be the guest conductor.

Bethany also had the opportunity this year to perform with The Ohio State University’s Honors Band on campus in Columbus, which was a one day event held on Feb. 15. She rehearsed during the day with guest conductor, Russel Mikkeslson, and later performed. Her guest conductor serves as the director of bands, professor of music and the head of conducting and ensembles with The Ohio State University. Bethany was selected from 778 students across the state of Ohio for The Ohio State Honors Band.

During the month of February, the Kindergarten music classes continued working on their graduation program songs for May 20, which begins at 7 p.m. in the elementary gymnasium. Along with our work on our graduation songs students have also been working on steady beat, high and low sounds and deciding if we should walk or skip to a melody of a song. The week of Valentine’s Day students learned what a duet was and how to sing one. We began by singing the first part as a whole group, and then we learned the second part. After everyone knew both parts we divided the class in half and sang it as a duet, two parts happening at the same time! Students were then asked to switch parts and sing the song again.

Lincolnview Elementary School is proud to announce that Madison Langdon and Creed Jesse, grade 5, have had artwork accepted in the 2014 Ohio Art Education’s Youth Art Month and Young Peoples Art Exhibition. The art exhibition consists of Ohio students in grades kindergarten through eighth grade. Madison Landon’s artwork will be on display at the State Teachers’ Retirement Systems (STRS) building, in Columbus during the month of March. Creed Jesse’s artwork will be on display at Rhodes State Office Tower in Columbus from March 2-28.

Over 120 pieces were selected for the juried show from the nine regions of the state that represent OAEA. The exhibit is sponsored by the Ohio Art Education Association, which is the professional organization for art teachers in Ohio. OAEA works to promote the arts and recognizes quality student art throughout the state through various exhibits at state and regional levels. A reception and awards ceremony will be held in Columbus on Saturday March 15, for the young artists, their families and teachers.
