Shirley W. Glowacki

Shirley W. Glowacki, 90, of Greene, husband for 66 years of Agnes (Harper) Glowacki, died Wednesday, September 11, 2013, at St. Joseph Hospital in Warren. Born August 7, 1923, in Greene, he was the last surviving child of the late John and Sophia (Koziol) Glowacki, who had immigrated from Lezany, Poland.

Shirley was raised in Greene and was a 1942 graduate of Greene High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in March of 1943 and served on the USS Barry in the Atlantic Theatre, where he received a Unit Presidential Citation.

American Flag for obituaries 6-2011He later joined the submarine service and served on the USS Hackleback for several tours in the Pacific Theatre until his honorable discharge as a Firefighter 2nd Class in 1946.

As part of the “Greatest Generation” after the end of World War II, he re-entered civilian life, working as a welder and machine assembler and retiring from Wean Industries in 1982. He and his wife, Agnes, were involved in dairy and grain farming in Greene for many years. Shirley was a member of the former Greene Community Church and in recent years attended the Greene Church of the Nazarene. He was a 50-year member of Gustavus Masonic Lodge 442, Free & Accepted Masons, in Kinsman, where he served as most worshipful master in 1968. He was also a 32nd degree Mason in the Scottish Rite Valley of Youngstown and was a member of the Al Koran Shrine Temple, A.A.O.N.M.S. of Cleveland. Shirley and Agnes were past patron and matron of the Order Eastern Star, Chapter 33, of Kinsman. Proud of his service during World War II, he was a member of the Submarine Veterans of WWII and traveled throughout the United States to submariner reunions with his wife, Agnes. He was also a member and past commander of Greene Center Post 3967, VFW in Greene.

Besides his wife, Shirley leaves his four children, Wanda Carmon of Windsor, Conn., and Joyce Glowacki, Sheila Glowacki and Gary Glowacki, all of Greene; four grandchildren, Lisa (Bernard) Petkis, Frank W. (Taryn) Carmon IV, both of Windsor, Conn., Timothy H. (Kristin) Carmon of South Windsor, Conn., and Samuel Glowacki of Euclid. He also leaves four great-grandchildren, Kyle and Evan Petkis, and Drew and Emily Carmon of Connecticut.

Four brothers, Stanley Glowacki, Max “Metz” Glowe, Claude Glowe and William Glowacki; and five sisters, Anna Glowe , Laura Simpson, Helen Cadwallader, Blanche Johnson and Agnes Williams; also preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, September 16, at the Carl W. Hall Funeral Home, 533 N. Park Ave., Warren. Burial with military honors will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery in Greene.

Calling hours are from 4-7 p.m. Sunday, September 15, with a Masonic service at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
