International DeMolay news

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – AJ Thomas and Bob Laing of Van Wert were participants in the 46th International DeMolay Congress June 12-15 in Minneapolis. The congress hosted participants from all fifty states, Canada, Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, Italy, Serbia and Romania.

The conference featured keynote addresses from Minnesota Secretary of State Mark Ritchie, Dr. Verna Price, world renowned financial expert Adam Carroll, and Dr. Tony Paustian. In addition to the education and leadership activities, attendees also engaged in policy discussions on the floor of the Minnesota House of Representatives.
Thomas is the son of Jill and Keith Thomas. He attends Ashland University and is the state marshal of the Ohio DeMolay.

Laing is the son of Barb and Kevin Laing and is studying pre-dentistry at Miami (Ohio) University. Laing was also elected by the delegates of the International DeMolay Congress to serve as the 47th International master councilor. In this position, he is the top youth leader of DeMolay worldwide and provides senior executive leadership to the DeMolay Congress.

Laing will work with state and international DeMolay leaders to help encourage youth leadership, community service, and community engagement and will plan and preside over the next International Session in Kansas City in 2014. He will also serve on the Board of Directors of DeMolay International. Laing is the only Van Wert DeMolay to serve as Ohio state master councilor, and only the second from Ohio to be elected to an international position.

DeMolay International is the world’s largest youth fraternal organization in the world. Started in 1919 in Kansas City, Mo., DeMolay serves young men ages 12-21. It promotes youth leadership, character building and community service.

The young men of Van Wert are served by Van Wert Chapter, which meets on the first and third Sundays at the Masonic Center, 148½ E, Main St.
