Robert Hoyt Shindeldecker

Robert Hoyt “Bob” Shindeldecker, 92, of Ohio City, went to be with his Lord and Savior at 10:58 p.m. Wednesday, April 10, 2013, at the Van Wert Area Inpatient Hospice Center.

He was born July 8, 1920, in Ohio City, the son of the late Eugene Fields and Hattie Annetta (High) Shindeldecker. On December 4, 1948, he married Ceola Fern (Barnhart) Shindeldecker, who preceded him in death on January 6, 1969.

Mr. Shindeldecker retired from Continental Can Company (Greif Bros.) and farmed. He enjoyed riding motorcycles and raising exotic animals on his farm for many years. He also collected and restored antique tractors and cars.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the Third Division, 30th Infantry, during World War II and received the Purple Heart. He was a member of Harvey Lewis Post 346 of the American Legion.

Survivors include a son, Kerry (Liz) Shindeldecker of Ohio City; four daughters, Vicki (Jerry) Saylor and Penny Medford, both of Van Wert, Sheree (Tim) Tumlinson of Versailles, Ky., and Robin Shindeldecker of East Liverpool; one brother, Walter (Audrey) Shindeldecker of Findlay; three sisters, Ilo Mercer of Convoy, Evelyn (William) Barnhart of Van Wert and Ethel (John) Rollins of Ohio City; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

A daughter, Connie Sue Gellenbeck; three great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Carl W. Shindeldecker; and a sister, Janice Enyart, also preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, April 15, at Cowan & Son Funeral Home in Van Wert, with the Rev. Paul W. Miller officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Ohio City, with graveside military rites performed American Legion Post 346.

Calling hours are from noon until the time of service Monday at the funeral home.
